Waikato has retained the Ranfurly Shield with a hard fought 44-36 win over Southland at Rugby Park in Hamilton.
The home side scored six tries to three, with Bruce Reihana claiming a hat-trick of touchdowns for the Mooloos.
First five David Hill was the star for Southland, scoring a try and adding 21 points with the boot.
Waikato led 17-16 at halftime.
And in today's other first division encounter, Otago picked up their first win in the NPC this season, beating Counties 22-13 at Carisbrook.
