Kevin Gloag has quit as coach of the Otago NPC rugby team.
He also stepped down as assistant coach of the Highlanders Super 12 side.
Otago had a disappointing NPC by their high standards, finishing eighth out of 10 teams, with only three wins.
"I have enjoyed my involvement with Otago rugby, but I have done my time," Gloag said yesterday. "While we didn't achieve the results we sought and the results the Otago public wanted, it has been a rewarding experience for me, and I leave Otago rugby with no regrets."
Gloag gained a national reputation as a coach from his deeds with South Canterbury between 1991 and 1994. He lifted the province out of the third division in his first year and to the semifinals of the second division in his second year. He has also been a selector and coach for the New Zealand under-19 team.
Otago Rugby Union chief executive John Hornbrook wished Gloag well and thanked him for his services to Otago rugby and the Highlanders.
"While we haven't had the results we wanted this season, Kevin always did his best for the team," Hornbrook said.
Peter Sloane has been confirmed as head coach for the Highlanders for 2001. The positions of Otago NPC coach and Highlanders' assistant coach will be advertised.
