Wallabies coach Robbie Deans has backed Australian Rugby Union (ARU) boss John O'Neill over the Lote Tuqiri sacking, amid unsubstantiated reports of player unrest at the decision.
Deans commented publicly on Tuqiri's axing for the first time since Wednesday's announcement, after several weekend newspaper reports criticised O'Neill's handling of the case.
Tuqiri's contract was torn up last Monday, but neither he nor the ARU have revealed what his disciplinary breach was, as Tuqiri and his management prepared to take legal action.
"I want to make clear that I was consulted during the process and I completely support the ARU's decision. I also fully support John O'Neill's leadership on this issue," Deans told the Sydney Morning Herald. "Obviously, I am unable to discuss Lote's actual termination but I have been concerned by how some have seized on this issue and may have attempted to use this to their advantage."
Sydney's Sun-Herald reported several Wallabies were unhappy at the ARU's treatment of Tuqiri, a popular team member who was signed until 2012 on a five-year deal worth up to A$1 million ($1.28 million) a year.
The paper quoted an unnamed source close to the team as saying the players were "shocked" at the decision and scared of O'Neill.
"I always enjoyed working with Lote," Deans said, "and no one has wanted more for him to do well in the game than me."
