It looks increasingly unlikely that All Blacks Daniel Carter and Kieran Read will play for for Canterbury in Saturday night's Ranfurly Shield challenge against Wellington.
Coach Rob Penney says Carter has a calf strain while Read has taken a heavy knock to the knee.
However, Penney says All Black team-mates Richie McCaw, Brad Thorn and Wyatt Crockett should all be good to go. He says the trio will be available for selection if they get through the next 48 hours.
Isaac Ross and Owen Franks will not be considered until next week.
