Rugby: Canterbury retain shield, Northland keep semi hopes alive

Canterbury has beaten Northland 28-22 at Jade Stadium to retain the Ranfurly Shield for the summer.

Justin Marshall scored two tries, while Andrew Mehrtens and Mark Mayerhofler added one each for the home side, while Fero Lasagavibau scored two and Tony Monaghan one for Northland.

Canterbury led 14-nil at halftime.

Northland take a bonus point from the match to put them in fourth place on the NPC points table.

The win also assures Wellington of a place in the semifinals.
