Callum Bruce, picked in the draft by the Chiefs last year, is transferring to the Waikato Rugby Union.
Bruce had an out-clause in his Otago Rugby Football Union contract which enabled him to exit his two-year deal due to his non-selection in the 2008 Highlanders squad.
Bruce, 24, debuted for Otago in 2005 and has played 22 games for the Highlanders.
