Bay of Plenty 19
Northland 14
A dream start to the national championship was on the cards for Northland at halftime.
But Bay of Plenty woke up after the break in Rotorua, cut out the silly penalties, sharpened their attacking edge and with a bucketload of possession from the lineouts, won well as the plucky visitors visibly tired.
Even so, it was not until the 61st minute that the Bay got in front, followed shortly after by the sin binning of Northland prop Bronson Murray.
Northland defended resolutely and despite being plundered in the lineouts were worth their halftime advantage, courtesy of a try to wing Troy Woodman - after Zar Lawrence dropped a high ball and quick hands moved the ball right - and three Lachie Munro penalties.
But Bay of Plenty spent the first 10 minutes after the restart pressing hard and by using Northland's first half tactic - playing as much of the game in their opponents' half - got a good result.
Luke Braid's try after 53 minutes was a messy one for Northland to concede, but fine reward for sound support play.
It has been a messy week for the Bay too, with coach Greg Smith's future in jeopardy. Talks are scheduled between the union and Smith next week, in the wake of upheaval between coach and players in the last few days.
Bay of Plenty 19 (Luke Braid try; Mike Delany 4 pen, con)
