The Otago Rugby Football Union has joined forces with England's Leeds in an alliance that will lead to information, player and coaching exchange between the two clubs.
Otago chief executive Russell Gray confirmed yesterday a "memorandum of understanding" had been signed between Leeds Rugby Ltd and his union.
The relationship was established through links between Otago's director of rugby strategy and development, Tony Gilbert, and former Welsh test forward Phil Davies, who fills a similar role at Leeds.
Gray said the liaison was aimed at sharing knowledge and ideas, and giving players and coaches a chance to experience overseas rugby while retaining links with Otago.
Leeds players and coaches would also get the chance to visit Otago.
The union would introduce Leeds players into the NPC squad only when there was a gap. This season, Leeds-based prop Michael Cusack played for Kaikorai and made an appearance for Otago in an NPC warm-up match.
