Weather worries for Shield clash

Canterbury tonight defend the Ranfurly Shield against Wellington in one of the most anticipated games of the domestic season.

Wellington is expecting a hot reception from the Canterbury fans and a cold one from the local weather when they run out onto Jade Stadium.

Wellington coach John Plumtree is hoping the forecast strong winds and rain will have passed through Christchurch by game time.

Christchurch is heading for a low of minus 1C tonight. Kick off is at 7.35pm.

Meanwhile, Auckland are introducing a new young lock to the NPC tomorrow, with a familiar pedigree.

Twenty-two-year-old Jay Williams makes his first ever appearance in top class rugby in the match against Northland.

He is the younger brother of All Black lock Ali Williams, and has inherited the family's height, being more than two metres tall.

Auckland coach Pat Lam said Williams junior deserves a call up. He said because of injuries to the loose forwards, Brad Mika has shifted to number eight so Williams will be brought in.

Lam has brought back Doug Howlett on the right wing. Joe Rokocoko will play off the bench.
