Former All Black greats Craig Dowd and Jeff Wilson have been sacked as North Harbour coaches with still one year left on their contracts.
Coach Dowd and assistant coach Wilson took the team to an 11th place finish in the ITM Cup this season.
North Harbour CEO Brett Hollister said the union had been looking for a top seven finish to confirm its place in next season's top flight.
He said the 11th place finish simply wasn't good enough.
"The end of season results were below expectations," Mr Hollister said.
