Manawatu 18
Auckland 21
Auckland haven't been beaten by Manawatu since 1981 but they did their best in Palmerston North today to hand the Turbos a rare win.
They lacked urgency, made handling errors and dropped off tackles and found themselves under considerable pressure from a fired-up Manawatu side thrashed 45-18 in their season opener against Hawkes Bay last weekend.
They couldn't even take advantage of the Turbos being reduced to 14 men when wing Tomasi Cama was shown a yellow card on the stroke of halftime - the 10-minute spell ended 3-3 - but two tries in four minutes proved the difference for Auckland.
The first was scored by Patrick Tuipulotu, who crashed over after a strong burst by Auckland wing George Moala only seconds after Cama returned to the field. Sean Polwart crossed soon after, finishing off a break started by Hadleigh Parkes.
