Luke McAlister yesterday offered North Harbour a mea culpa after a week of turmoil for the union surrounding the former All Black.
McAlister has admitted: "I did not communicate as well as I should have with [Harbour coach] Liam Barry," after failing to turn up for training at the start of the week.
His actions led Barry to omit him from the squad for Thursday night's opening ITM Cup game, a 46-29 loss at Carisbrook to Otago.
The backdrop was McAlister seeking an early release from his New Zealand Rugby Union contract to leave for Toulouse to start his three-year contract with the French club.
McAlister said yesterday that he had apologised to Barry "and will do so to the team". "It caused an unwanted distraction and I accept that I now need to make good for that."
Harbour chief executive Brett Hollister said the issue had been dealt with and McAlister was available for selection for the second-round game against Tasman at North Harbour Stadium next Tuesday night.
The NZRU took a dim view of McAlister's conduct over a possible early release. General manager professional rugby Neil Sorensen, reflecting the union's displeasure, indicated it would be happy to get shot of McAlister once finances had been sorted with Toulouse.
McAlister said he appreciated the support he had had from Harbour and the NZRU and acknowledged "any release could only come about with their agreement and support".
As to his wanting to leave early, "I am simply looking at the options so I can ensure I have a clear plan around how I manage my obligations in New Zealand and, in due course, France."
McAlister is expected at Harbour's training session today.
