Auckland were outscored on the try count but still beat Wellington 19-12 in an NPC warm-up rugby match in Auckland today.
Halfback Steve Devine was Auckland's sole tryscorer, with utility back Brent Ward adding the remainder of his side's points via four penalties and a conversion.
Wellington, who trailed 5-16 at halftime, scored tries to winger Lome Fa'atau and replacement halfback Nigel Hunt.
The match, a typically messy early-season affair, saw both teams squander a number of opportunities although the defence of both sides was strong.
