Auckland are expected to announce the signing of former All Black Troy Flavell this week, while Roy Kinikinilau could be turning out for the Highlanders next season.
These were two of the bigger unresolved transfer stories that surfaced in the final hours before Friday's deadline, while one that was finalised was Tom Harding's decision to move from North Harbour to Worcester.
Flavell's return to New Zealand has long been documented, the only mystery was which province would want him.
North Harbour, Wellington, Auckland and Canterbury all expressed an interest. Harbour dropped out early when it was clear they were lacking the financial clout, while Wellington were unsure whether their trusted lock Luke Andrews would re-sign so made a tentative inquiry. When Andrews and Ross Filipo both put pen to paper, interest in Flavell dwindled.
Left with a choice between Auckland or Canterbury it became easier. Flavell has family in Auckland and as a former North Harbour player, enjoyed five seasons with the Blues.
Auckland and Blues chief executive David White would only say: "There could be some announcements this week."
Flavell's agent Rob Brady has been clear that his client will make his decision based on his Super 14 prospects.
The Blues already have competition for places in the back two rows, while the Crusaders have only two locks with Super 12 experience.
All Black coach Graham Henry is a big admirer of Flavell and will want him playing for a franchise that can give him ample game time.
Roy Kinikinilau has re-signed with the New Zealand Rugby Union but is off contract with Wellington and waiting to see where he ends up in Super 14 before committing to a province.
The Hurricanes may not find room for him but the Highlanders and the Chiefs have signalled they would.
Harding was tempted to Worcester as he couldn't be certain of his chances with the Blues. Harding is also English- and Welsh-qualified and his brother, Sam, plays for nearby Northampton.
Thomas Waldrom is another who is being courted by the Highlanders, who have lost No 8 Paul Miller.
Chris King, the Canterbury prop on loan to Otago, is thought to be keen to make the deal permanent but the Highlanders may not secure Ben Blair and Cameron McIntyre, the two Canterbury players they picked up in the draft last year.
