An injury to fullback Todd Miller has given Isaac Boss the chance to show his versatility for Waikato in the NPC first division rugby match against Northland in Hamilton tomorrow.
Boss, normally a halfback, was yesterday named to fill the No 15 jersey by coach John Mitchell after a knee injury meant Miller could not play.
"Bossy is a multiskilled player. He is also not unfamiliar with the role of fullback, having played there during some of his club rugby recently," said Mitchell.
The match will mark the return of All Blacks loose forwards Jono Gibbes and Marty Holah to the Waikato forward pack.
Gibbes, who will start at blindside flanker ahead of Liam Messam, will resume the captaincy.
In Gibbes' absence the leadership duties had fallen to No 8 Steven Bates, who drew praise from Mitchell.
"Steven has been outstanding in the captain's role over recent weeks and his added experience in this area will strengthen our team in general."
Another returning to action is prop Deacon Manu, who was not available last week because of personal reasons.
The other prop is Michael Collins, who has his first NPC starting spot this year.
Earning his first starting berth for Waikato in the competition is rookie lock Josh Sole, 24.
Apart from Miller, others unavailable because of injury were prop David Briggs, (injured back and finger), lock Toby Lynn (rolled ankle) and wing Solo Korovata (shoulder/neck).
