Northampton Saints face a Premier Rugby investigation and possible disciplinary action after George North was allowed to play on despite appearing to be knocked out in the east midlands derby against Leicester Tigers.
The Wales and Northampton winger - whose recent career has been blighted by concussions including two in the same game against England in February 2015 - was taken out in mid-air by Leicester wing Adam Thompstone and landed face first into the ground where he lay prone and apparently unconscious for several minutes.
The incident sparked an ugly melee and resulted in Thompstone being sent to the sin bin while a clearly groggy North was sent for a Head Injury Assessment, which he apparently passed and was allowed to return for the remainder of the match.
Strict Premier Rugby guidelines, backed by World Rugby, state any player suspected of being concussed should be removed immediately from play, while any player suspected of losing consciousness should not even undergo a Head Injury Assessment (HIA).
A Premier Rugby spokesman confirmed to Sportsmail disciplinary procedures would follow if Northampton - who deny North was unconscious - are suspected of failing to follow protocols.
