Wellington 35 Taranaki 17
Christian Cullen is back and so are Wellington.
Coincidence or not, when Cullen was reunited with his province after three months out after knee surgery, there was an urgency and purpose about the defending NPC champions which had been absent last week.
The All Black fullback tested the Taranaki line early with his running and brought off several strong tackles.
While he lacked a little sharpness, Cullen's instincts and skills were keen enough to give him two tries in Wellington's enterprising victory.
There was no sign of Cullen favouring his right knee, which had more cartilage removed after the Super 12 competition.
Whether Cullen's return was compelling enough to persuade the All Black selectors to make a late change for Saturday's test against the Springboks may remain unclear until the squad meet on Monday.
After their dismal opening round performance, the Wellington forwards dominated the Taranaki eight while their backs showed more enterprise out wide.
Those twin effects delivered converted tries to Cullen and Lome Fa'atau late in the first half and a significant lead.
When Cullen grubbered ahead and regathered for a try midway through the second half, his fitness and the Wellington win were evident.
