KEY POINTS:
Jed Rowlands has stepped down as coach of the world champion New Zealand women's rugby team.
Rowlands, who guided the Black Ferns to a third consecutive world title at Edmonton in Canada last September, is to be succeeded by his assistant Dale Atkins.
Former Canterbury and New Zealand Maori player Dale Atkins will be assisted by former All Blacks second five-eighth Warwick Taylor.
The coaching role becomes available every two years and Rowlands, who took the job at the end of 2002, opted not to reapply.
New Zealand Rugby Union deputy chief executive Steve Tew acknowledged Rowlands' contribution to furthering the Black Ferns' place atop the world standings.
Atkins said he was delighted with the promotion.
"This is a fantastic opportunity and a real honour," he said.
"The Black Ferns have set the standard in women's rugby and we will look to continue that proud record this year."
The Black Ferns play at home for the first time in two years when they take on Australia in tests at Wanganui on October 16 and Wellington on October 20.
