Bay of Plenty has won its first-ever defence of the Ranfurly Shield.
The Steamers have held off a second half fight-back from Waikato, to retain the shield 26-20 at Blue Chip Stadium in Mount Maunganui today.
Both sides scored two tries, with Anthony Tahana and Adrian Cashmore dotting down for Bay of Plenty, while Steven Bates and Sitiveni Sivivatu crossed for Waikato.
However, the boot of Glen Jackson proved the difference for the home side - the veteran first-five kicking four penalties and two conversions.
David Hill slotted two penalties and two conversions for Waikato.
