The selectors have been sharp this year in choosing some new talent like Aaron Smith, Barrett, Sam Cane, Retallick, Romano and reviving others' careers.
They will have another lock on the radar and Williams' latest trouble might be the chance to check their instincts once more.
Another halfback is needed and Tawera Kerr-Barlow was the young man asked to train with the squad several times this season.
Those standby roles should turn into full-blown duty.
That leaves one vacancy.
If they are taking three halfbacks, then a third hooker should travel to help centurion Keven Mealamu and Andrew Hore and pick up invaluable tuition from the experienced duo.
