All Black No 8 Rodney So'oialo could make a surprise return to the Wellington Lions this weekend.
The Lions were not expected to call upon So'oialo until after the quarterfinals of the Air New Zealand Cup.
However, Lions assistant coach Andre Bell says circumstances have changed and he is in the frame to play against Taranaki on Saturday.
He says because they have a few niggles So'oialo has been at training and may have to front up this week.
Bell says All Black second five-eighth Ma'a Nonu will start but will be without midfield partner Conrad Smith, who is still struggling with a leg injury.
