Former All Blacks captain Wayne Shelford has been named patron of New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) rugby.
Shelford, who served in the navy from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s, was officially appointed by Defence Force chief Lieutenant General Jerry Mateparae today.
"Buck is a great role model as a New Zealander, as an All Black, and as a member of the defence force family," Lt Gen Mateparae said.
"Buck consistently reflects the New Zealand defence force values of courage, comradeship, commitment and integrity."
During a lighter moment after receiving his NZDF blazer, Shelford told those gathered that things had changed since he left the service.
"I left the navy as a leading hand and here I am having my blazer helped on by a General and an Admiral."
Shelford played 48 games for the All Blacks, including 22 tests, and was captain 31 times.
