A strong New Zealand thread runs through the international rugby career of Sergio Parisse, Italy's captain in tomorrow's test against the All Blacks.
Seven years ago, then Italian coach John Kirwan identified Parisse as an exceptional talent and promoted him from under-19 grade rugby to the national squad for their tour to New Zealand.
That dramatic progress continued when Parisse was picked to play against the All Blacks in Hamilton in the only test on tour. It was a rise that stunned Parisse and his family.
"On the phone my dad asked if John Kirwan was in his right mind," Parisse recalled.
Subsequent national coaches have confirmed Kirwan's judgment and tomorrow the rangy No 8 will play his 65th test in national colours.
The latest Azurri coach, Nick Mallett, who led the Springboks to success in 1997-2000, has picked Parisse as captain after the form that made him the first Italian to reach the International Rugby Board player of the year awards.
"Sergio is a player who has personality and is respected by his teammates, referees and opponents, all of which are fundamental to becoming captain," Mallett said.
Parisse is still only 25 but has an extensive list of rugby credits and at 1.96m and 106kg, has all the athletic ingredients needed to continue at the top of international rugby.
He was born in Argentina where his rugby-loving father was based for work. He plays international rugby for Italy but club football in Paris where he lives with his beauty queen girlfriend Alexandra Rosenfeld.
As captain, his modus operandi is simple. "I am not a man of words, I am still young, I try to lead by example and convey feelings and passion."
