Kieran Read and Aaron Smith are the players the All Blacks can least afford to lose, according to Herald readers.

With over 2300 votes counted, Smith and Read both have received 24% support as the most irreplaceable All Black.

The 2013 IRB Player of the Year, Read has become one of the most consistent All Blacks, rarely having a poor showing in his 72 tests in the black jersey while his leadership skills are highly valued.

On the other hand, Smith has become one of the top halfbacks in world rugby with his speed and passing ability seeing him quickly become one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Although both players would be big losses, there is still promising immediate depth for the All Blacks coaches to pick from, with the likes of Liam Messam, Victor Vito and Steven Luatua capable of replacing Read in the case of injury, with Jerome Kaino able to switch to the number eight position.

Meanwhile, an excellent Super Rugby campaign from TJ Perenara would have fans sleeping slightly easier at night if Smith were to go down, while Brad Weber, Augustine Pulu and Andy Ellis all have their backers.

Brodie Retallick is third in the poll at 12%, with Beauden Barrett (8%), Richie McCaw (8%) and Ben Smith (7%) also receiving notable support.
