Kieran Read wants Hansen to coach All Blacks at next World Cup

New All Blacks skipper Kieran Read wants coach Steve Hansen to hang around until the next Rugby World Cup.

Hansen remains unsure whether he will extend his current contract with New Zealand Rugby past the 2017 Lions tour and up until the 2019 World Cup in Japan, where the All Blacks will seek a third straight title.

Following last year's Rugby World Cup victory in England, Hansen said: "I'd probably say it was more likely I won't be there after 2017".

Hansen has since added he's '50-50' on whether he'll still be coach in three years.

But Read, who Hansen announced as his new captain last month, has told TVNZ's Breakfast it would be great to have Hansen still in charge of the side in Japan for the sake of consistency.

"I'd love for him to stay. I hope he does," Read said.

"What we have as a team has been great over the past few years."

Read has captained the in All Blacks nine tests previously as Richie McCaw's vice captain, the first time against Italy in 2012, and has yet to taste defeat as skipper.

His first test as the regular captain will be against Wales at Eden Park on June 11.

Hansen last month confirmed Read as his replacement of McCaw who had captained the All Blacks since 2006 before his retirement after the Rugby World Cup.

"Reado's had experience already as captain nine times and whilst it will be a new experience to be there fulltime, at least he's had a taste of it," Hansen told Radio Sport.

"We have known for quite some time that five of the guys are going to be leaving, with a 1000 test matches between them.

"We've known for a while and we've planned for that."

Read told Breakfast that he was excited to take over from McCaw as skipper.

"It's a massive honour to lead the team. I'm really excited, it's going to be a great year and I'm humbled," he said.

"I've learnt a lot off Richie, and I'll certainly use those strengths going forward."
