Up 13-11 and with momentum starting to go their way, the All Blacks got a penalty 60m from the Springbok posts. It was also 25-odd metres from the touchline.
Option 1: stick it into touch and head for the tunnel. Option 2: Get Carter.
So Superman Dan lined it up and in best Don Clarke tradition banged it between the posts, with plenty to spare. Aah, the delights of kicking at altitude.
The effect? It was 16-11 at halftime and the All Blacks had an extra spring in their step. The grin on the All Black captain's usually grim, concentrated face told the story.

Fittingly, it was Mils Muliaina who started it. Receiving a pass inside the All Blacks' 22, the man who was centre for nine minutes before moving back to fullback raced to halfway and, with the Springbok defence outflanked, let Sitiveni Sivivatu loose down the left.
His inpass to Luke McAlister meant one defender, Fourie du Preez, was facing four All Blacks.
McAlister went alone, and beat the tackle to score. Had he not, he'd have put the needle into red on the greed-o-meter.
A 19-11 lead, which meant South Africa were still in the game, at least on the scoreboard, became 26-11. Two more tries followed in the next 12 minutes, but this was the moment the match was made safe.
