James Ryan might have tucked his All Black jersey from Friday night away in a safe place but on the evidence of that game he can expect to earn a few more.
The 22-year-old Highlanders lock stood out like a beacon during the national anthems because of his distinctive red hair and he continued to catch the eye throughout the 91-0 mauling of Fiji for his fine all-round play.
Although the hyperbole needs to be tempered because of the quality or otherwise of the opposition, Ryan was exceptional in the restarts, won all of his own lineout ball - except for one poor throw from Keven Mealamu - and was prominent in open play. This was no better illustrated than his explosive run in the 85th minute before he offloaded to Mils Muliaina as he went to ground.
Although Ali Williams is likely to get the nod to partner Chris Jack in the tests, Graham Henry must now have his customary sly grin on his face safe in the knowledge he now has a third quality lock who could cope against the Lions. Ryan now seems to be ahead of Jono Gibbes in the pecking order.
For Ryan, however, he's trying not to think that far ahead and wants to savour the experience of playing his first test after only one season of Super 12 rugby.
"I'm ecstatic and relieved," he said after his debut. "It was a great experience and was definitely a step up. Expectations are so much higher.
"I will always remember the haka - it was on another level. Once it finished I had to get my mind back on the job. The game itself was a bit of a blur, really."
A video of the game might refresh his memory and also find itself in the cabinet beside the black jersey. "This jersey is coming home with me mate," he said emphatically. "I'll keep that one for the rest of my life."
