First choice ABs likely to miss US test

Excitement seems to be the in-word for the All Blacks as they build towards Sunday's historic first test against the USA Eagles in Chicago. All Blacks coach Steve Hansen used the word, or variations of it, several times, in his final press call before boarding the plane. "The northern tours the last couple of years ... we've not seen the same sort of excitement we've seen today. All bodes well," said Hansen. This does seem promising news given the All Blacks played some tired rugby on their 2013 northern tour, failing to capture the at times ethereal heights of their Rugby Championship brand of play.

Several first choice All Blacks are likely to miss out on playing on Soldier Field this weekend.

Richie McCaw, Aaron Smith, Owen Franks and Sam Whitelock are a few of the players likely to watch from the stands at the iconic Chicago venue.

Another senior player, centre Conrad Smith says it's a big squad, so some players are going to have to sit out.

"It's the reality of a team sport and we've been given no indication yet, or I haven't anyway, as to whether I'm playing or not."

So I'll just take it and move on. I'll still enjoy the week and I'll enjoy whether I'm sitting in the stand or running around, it'll still be a great experience I think."

The All Blacks arrival in Chicago has failed to stimulate the local media, with only three American journalists attending this morning's media session.
