As always, the naming of the first All Black squad was just as much about those who missed out as those who got in. Into the unlucky camp go Nick Evans, Craig Newby and Sione Lauaki, although the latter does have the consolation of training with the squad this week and knowing that he is still being considered for the 26-man Lions squad.
Henry said Lauaki was: "... very close to the side and we just think another week in the training environment will be good for him. We are picking a squad to play the Lions at the end of the week and we think he's a strong possibility."
Evans can curse his luck that the mysterious fifth selector - Henry's wife Raewyn - was unable to get her own way. She plumped for the Highlanders' five-eighths but was overruled. As for Newby, a niggling injury and the fact Rodney So'oialo can cover seven, pushed him out.
"The fifth selector picked Evans," confirmed Henry, "but she couldn't have all the say. I think Nick Evans had a big game last night and that is good for him and New Zealand rugby. Craig has played well throughout the year at six. He went into last night's trial with an injury and I didn't think he quite nailed it. But he's still in the frame."
Also in the frame is Joe Rokocoko. Henry said he will make contact with sevens coach Gordon Tietjens today for a progress report.
Jono Gibbes, the Maori captain, will be monitored if he plays against the Lions next week. Other Maori under scrutiny are Corey Flynn, Rico Gear and Leon MacDonald. Carl Hayman is a definite starter.
It is, however, very much the end of the road for some major names of New Zealand rugby.
Henry said he spoke to Reuben Thorne on Saturday morning to inform the former All Black captain that he would not be selected.
"He was discussed in some length last night," said Henry. "I rang him to talk about his qualities. We have been impressed at how he has played but we've got to think about the future. We know his qualities but we need to think about bringing young locks on. He's not a lock of the future but he could do a job for us."
That need to build for the future counted against Carl Hoeft, the former All Black prop who has had a major renaissance this season. Friday night's trial could have been the last first class game for Andrew Mehrtens on New Zealand soil.
There is the possibility of Mehrtens being called up should Dan Carter get injured. . Probably, though, it's time to say farewell with Mehrtens now likely to take to an overseas offer.
