NEW ZEALAND
Mils Muliaina - 7
A couple of threatening runs but largely a defensive day out. Nothing flashy, no mistakes. Good.
Doug Howlett - 6
Missed one tackle on opposite Ben Cohen, which could have proved costly. Otherwise didn't see much of the ball. Few chances.
Tana Umaga - 7
Perfectly positioned on Dan Carter's shoulder for opening try, almost got a second. One bad knock-on, but strong defensive day.
Aaron Mauger - 4
Charged-down clearing kick led to England try, sloppy handling, average kicking, toiled hard in defence. Not one of his best.
Sitiveni Sivivatu - 6
Sloppy, casual start, but rarely saw the ball in attacking situations.
Daniel Carter - 8
Breaks set up both All Black tries, a critical tackle on Mark Cueto, and kicked 5 from 6. Conceded penalty which led to England's try, but a top day.
Byron Kelleher - 6
Badly missed tackle on Pat Sanderson and caught out in the leadup to England's try. Important tackle, among many, on Mike Tindall. Up and down, mostly good.
Rodney So'oialo - 7.5
The unexpected lineout king, with five takes. Dropped the ball twice early, but plenty of solid defensive work. His best test.
Chris Masoe - 7
Eventful day. Plenty of good things. Unlucky to lose 20 minutes when the props were sinbinned, then copped a yellow himself.
Jerry Collins - 8
One rash pass late on could have been costly. The only blot on a strong, committed performance. A tireless defensive warrior throughout.
Chris Jack - 7
Only took a couple of lineouts. Tough battle against Steve Borthwick. Rarely sighted. Part of strong defensive, and scrum, effort.
Ali Williams - 7
For Williams read Jack, and replace Borthwick with Danny Grewcock. Increasingly influential pack figure.
Carl Hayman - 8
Scrum rock who put England's young pretender in his place. Immense, immovable figure at the set piece.
Keven Mealamu - 7
Burrowed over for the second try, but his throwing radar went wonky in the final quarter.
Tony Woodcock - 7
Impressive again. Got a yellow card for pulling a maul down. Strong day.
RESERVES
Andrew Hore - Not used.
Neemia Tialata - Lucky to escape head shot on Charlie Hodgson, sinbinned for lying on the ball. Ordinary all round.
Jason Eaton - A couple of minutes while Williams was bandaged.
Mose Tuiali'i - Last 4 minutes for So'oialo.
Piri Weepu - Got the last 8 minutes.
Leon MacDonald - On for the last 3 minutes for Mauger.
Joe Rokocoko - Got the last 7 minutes, one good run.
ENGLAND
Josh Lewsey - 7
Strong defence, especially under high ball. Generally well covered, but a decent game.
Mark Cueto - 7
Tidy defensive day. A couple of chances, proving he's wasted standing outside a plodding midfield.
Jamie Noon - 5
Defensively okay, offensively no threat. No attacking edge, so nothing unusual about this England midfield.
Mike Tindall - 6.5
One half break, solid going back and forward, although one silly flip pass wasted a good position.
Ben Cohen - 7
Strong runner who thirsted for action. Like Cueto, wasted on the extremities of this backline.
Charlie Hodgson - 7
Kicked five from six and had a decent day. Copped a head high shot from Tialata. Couldn't ignite the backline, but not sure who could.
Matt Dawson - 7
Early charge down led to England try. Never gave up. Good battle with Kelleher. Good chats with referee.
Martin Corry - 6.5
Scored England's try. An honest toiler lacking an inspired edge. Gave away silly possession as England threatened at the end. Bad miss on Carter in first try.
Lewis Moody - 7
Energetic, didn't drop his head, plenty of defensive hustle. Challenged strongly at the restarts. Good day out.
Pat Sanderson - 7
Powerful run down the touchline showed his pace, got through much defensive work. Decent footballer.
Danny Grewcock - 7
Conceded early penalty, as usual. Strong figure in close quarters. Kept powderkeg temperament in check.
Steve Borthwick - 7
England's best lineout man. Some strong tackles, good grunt level.
Phil Vickery - 5
Veteran unable to make impact at the scrum against Woodcock. Durable toiler.
Steve Thompson - 6
Big man, big voice, plenty of huff and puff and the odd decent moment, but no more.
Andrew Sheridan - 5
Never gave up, but got a lesson. He's young and he's promising. Watch out in World Cup year.
