Julian Savea, the hulking All Black wing with one of the best try-scoring strike rates in international rugby, is back in the fold after undergoing a gruelling three-week regime to improve his poor fitness levels.
Savea will play his first test of the year against the Wallabies in Sydney on Saturday, but has had to work hard to reclaim his No11 jersey from Charles Piutau, who has impressed against Manu Samoa, Argentina and South Africa.
The selectors were concerned at Savea's lack of conditioning during the latter stages of the Hurricanes' season - particularly in the playoffs. In the Super Rugby final against the Highlanders in Wellington, Savea, who will turn 25 tomorrow, dropped a pass from Brad Shields with the try-line open - a rare handling mistake which in retrospect was a big blow to his team's chances of a maiden title.
Now, with his diet improved and after some tough sessions with All Black trainer Nic Gill which have cut his fat levels, Savea is set to step up.
