Chris Jack will have to fight for his spot in the All Blacks when he returns to New Zealand next year.
The former All Black lock has made an instant impression for Western Province in South Africa's Currie Cup.
All Black assistant coach Wayne Smith says Jack is a quality player, but will have to prove himself again at home. He says while a player is away a lot of depth comes through and there will be a contest for that position.
Wayne Smith says the All Black coaches do have their eye on two players currently playing in the UK in the hope they will return for Rugby World Cup consideration. It is believed the likes of Carl Hayman and Nick Evans are in the frame.
