"I was just thankful I had the opportunity to correct things personally but then it came to a point where I thought, I'm going to have to kick this. I had the belief. I felt pretty good. I have done a bit and I back myself. I had to treat it like another kick which I know is easier said than done.
"It was quite weird actually. I didn't think too much. It was just getting back to the mark and lining up the kick - trying to treat it like a normal kick."
There were shades of Stephen Donald's redemption story of missing touch in 2010 and then kicking the match-winner in the Rugby World Cup final. Albeit this version played out in just minutes instead of 12 months.
Slade of course also donned the number 10 jersey at the 2011 World Cup but played a part in Donald's fairytale story - being one of the three first-fives to suffer an injury. Slade started the quarter-final victory over Argentina as Dan Carter's replacement but he then also was struck by a tournament-ending groin injury. An infection after groin surgery further set back his return.
The Crusaders first-five has had a tough run of injuries, breaking his jaw twice during the 2011 season and breaking his leg in the 2012 season.
Saturday night was the 27-year-old's 15th test in black and his 10th appearance as a substitute. It was in the much more comfortable position of first-five, after having to play the final six minutes at halfback in the Johannesburg defeat two weeks ago as a replacement for an injured Tawera Kerr-Barlow.
"I just wanted to do my bit for the team - I didn't want to stuff it up after I missed touch minutes earlier. I'm just glad I could pull it through for the boys. The boys did all of the hard work. I just did my job which is what you have to do in the All Black jersey."
It adds another chapter to the All Blacks-Wallabies rivalry that, in 176 meetings, has produced plenty of dramatic moments. Jonah Lomu's last-minute try in 2000, John Eales' last-second penalty a month later, Toutai Kefu's late try in 2001, George Gregan's "four more years" call in 2003 - and now Slade's calm conversion.
