KEY POINTS:
All Blacks supporters have descended on the Irish Independent website to defend their team in response to a highly critical column published earlier this week.
Columnist Vincent Hogan launched a scathing attack on New Zealand rugby ahead of their test match against Ireland on Sunday (NZT), labelling the All Blacks bullies of world rugby, highlighting their World Cup failures and questioning the use of the haka.
"Seeing (the All Blacks) get nailed is one of rugby's great redemptive offerings. It's like watching the school ruffian pick the wrong fight and end up with a nosebleed," Hogan wrote.
However, All Blacks fans from around the world have returned serve at the Irish journalist through letters published on the website.
"Bigoted insults just laughable" was the heading on Martin Moodie's letter, while Christopher McKenzie of Wanganui said the article gave the All Blacks plenty of motivation to continue their unbeaten run against the Irish.
"On behalf of all New Zealanders, I would just like to thank Vincent Hogan for providing ample motivation for the All Blacks prior to this weekend's test against the Irish," he said.
"I don't understand this attitude towards our rugby team, coming from a journalist from another small nation."
Brendan McElroy of Dublin said Hogan's comments were small-minded and made Irish rugby fans come across as whingers.
"It's a sad state of affairs when Irish rugby commentators like Vincent Hogan resort to unfounded claims, vitriol and silly cliché to stir up support. Rather than being smart or stirring, it all comes across as insecure and petty," he said.
While in response to Hogan's claims that rugby is all New Zealand has got, Tim Gorton pointed out that despite all the World Cup failures, New Zealand still has plenty going for it.
"After the game we can still have a laugh at ourselves, even after a World Cup meltdown. Other stuff we like to do is make movies, go sailing and drink wine. Come on down and enjoy yourself sometime."
