Wayne Smith is said to be considering a coaching role with England after meeting head coach Stuart Lancaster in South Africa on Friday.
The United Kingdom's Guardian newspaper has reported that Lancaster flew to Cape Town to meet Chiefs assistant coach Smith.
The newspaper said the pair had a productive meeting and that Smith, now back in New Zealand, had to decide whether he is prepared to move to England for three years until the end of the next World Cup.
Former All Blacks assistant coach Smith has a two-year deal at the Chiefs, who are leading the Super Rugby competition, but has an exit clause after this season. He has said he is interested in a return to the international game, but not as a head coach.
