New Zealand have finished with the flourish they so desperately desired to seal fifth position at the World Rugby Under 20 Championship in Manchester.
The 55-24 victory over Australia looks convincing enough, but they had to work hard to subdue a physical team that drove well, spread the ball, and posed serious questions in the scrums.
So competitive were Australia that they actually led 24-21 just into the second half, and continued to pressure New Zealand to the point that prop Sean Paranihi was sinbinned.
But New Zealand were irrepressible from turnover and counter-attack ball and showed their full range of passing skills and support play.
Their fifth try, to replacement hooker Asafo Aumua, was a superbly constructed team effort going through several phases and pairs of hands. But there was at least as much to like about the next try, to wing Peter Umaga-Jensen, after a brilliant cutout pass off his left hand by lock Isaia Walker-Leawere. The latter had earlier scored an intercept try which can be attributed to his height and athleticism.
