The Warriors have activated an option in Shaun Johnson's contract for next season - but his long term future at the club won't be negotiated until the NRL salary cap is set for 2018 and beyond.
Warriors managing director Jim Doyle confirmed on Sky Television yesterday that the Warriors were taking up the final year of Johnson's current contract - not that there was ever any doubt.
At the start of the 2014 season Johnson extended his deal to the end of the 2017 season, so the option was simply a rubber stamping exercise.
But Doyle said that given Johnson's status at the club - he is among the top two or three earners - it is prudent to wait until the 2018 Cap levels are confirmed before finalising his next contract. The current cap is A$6.5 million ($6.88 million), but could rise as high as A$11 million ($11.67 million) under the new broadcasting deal.
Johnson confirmed his desire to stay at Mt Smart, for what will be his seventh year in the NRL.
