Warriors chief executive Wayne Scurrah has offered a flat "no comment" in response to Australian media reports the club has agreed a $1 million three-year deal with Titans hooker Nathan Friend.
It was yesterday reported Friend's signing was a done deal, suggesting the 30-year-old was set to reveal his intention to join the Warriors after last night's match between the Titans and Cowboys in Townsville.
"I suppose we will get a better indication after [last night] but he has been of value over the last couple of years, and I expect him to continue to be for the rest of this year," Titans coach John Cartwright said.
The story said the Warriors officials were planning to formally announce the signing of the 131-game veteran come Monday.
Friend had already indicated he would reject Gold Coast's latest offer, believed to be worth about $700,000 for three years.
Friend would appear a significant upgrade on incumbent hooker Aaron Heremaia, however Friend's age would mean such a large contract would not be without risks.
The Queensland native would also represent another roadblock in the path of emerging talent Alehana Mara.
Despite an impressive three-game cameo last season, the 21-year-old Mara has yet to find favour with coach Ivan Cleary this season and would appear to be a plum target for other clubs.
