Former England coach Steve McNamara is being tipped as the potential third assistant coach at the Warriors.

On Tuesday, Stephen Kearney was announced as the new Warriors coach, with Andrew McFadden and Stacey Jones as his assistants.

At the time Warriors CEO Jim Doyle also said the club would be a appointing a third assistant coach, "with international experience".

Australian sources have confirmed to the New Zealand Herald that McNamara is the likely candidate for the role.

Kearney and McNamara know each other well, as they were rival head coaches at international level for almost six years. Their international playing careers also intersected in the 1990s.

When McNamara was replaced by Wayne Bennett as English coach last year, Kearney expressed his sympathy for McNamara, especially as the appointment came after England had beaten the world No1 ranked Kiwis 2-1 in the test series late last year.

McNamara has been an assistant coach under Trent Robinson at the Roosters since the start of the 2014 season. Aside from his England role, he has also been head coach at the Bradford Bulls.
