New Zealand Rugby League chief executive Gary Allcock said yesterday he was determined to go when his contract expired, despite a strong bid by president Gerald Ryan to keep him in the job.
After a NZRL board meeting yesterday, Ryan said it was decided that Allcock, who intends to leave at the end of January, will be given preferential treatment if he chooses to stay in the job.
"It is known that he wants to go back to the police force, but I would like him to stay and we've tried to convince him to do that," Ryan said.
"He's been instrumental and very supportive in everything I've tried to work towards, but you do have an element in the game that are like fleas on a dog.
"Most have been dealt with but we do hope that for the sake of the game they look at what they are doing."
Allcock said he was determined to leave and that he was expected back in the police force at the end of March.
But he also alluded to people in the game he felt were not working in the best interests of rugby league.
"It was a good meeting, very positive, I've got some leave due to me at the end of January but I am definitely going to go," he said.
"I made my points on why I am leaving in the boardroom today and they will stay there.
"But there are a number of things that I am not happy about, but at the end of the day it is my personal decision."
