The Canterbury Bulls enjoyed a dominant seven tries to two National Premiership grand final win over the Wai-Coa-Bay Stallions at Mt Smart Stadium yesterday.
The Bulls eventually won 40-8 in wet and blustery conditions, on the back of a powerful forward display and efficient finishing through the backline, but the Stallions battled strongly and were unfortunate to have a number of refereeing decisions go against them.
The match followed a week of drama and contention over which teams would contest the final, with a messy dispute over player eligibility rules preventing both the Counties Manukau Stingrays and Akarana Falcons from claiming their right to take on the Bulls.
Wai-Coa-Bay were only granted their place in the final on Friday morning, little more than 24-hours before the match, after an NZRL jury of appeal deducted competition points to eliminate both the Auckland-based sides.
The Bulls were strong favourites for the title and showed why in the first 20 minutes of the game with tries to Erwin Sauni, Toi Sepuloni, and Bruce Havea giving them an 18-0 lead.
