SYDNEY (AP) Jamie Soward's field goal with 10 seconds remaining gave Penrith a 19-18 victory over the defending champion Sydney Roosters on Saturday, booking the Panthers a place in the preliminary finals in Australia's National Rugby League.
The Panthers earned a second-week bye with the win, while the Roosters will next play the North Queensland Cowboys, who beat the Brisbane Broncos 32-20 in a later match Saturday.
On Friday, South Sydney, led by Adam Reynolds' two tries and 20 points overall, beat Manly 40-24.
The Rabbitohs also advanced to the preliminary finals in two weeks, while Manly will play the winner of Sunday's elimination match between Melbourne and the Canterbury Bulldogs in the second round next weekend.
The NRL grand final is scheduled for Oct. 5 in Sydney.
