NRL: Why the NRL boss won't be ditching golden point

Coaches seem to hate it but clearly NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg is a fan of the game's golden-point system.

Greenberg laughed off claims from Canterbury coach Des Hasler that the system was going to be overhauled at the end of the season.

Instead the league's boss said golden point brought an extra level of excitement to the game which added to the spectacle.

"Des Hasler doesn't make those decisions. The NRL does," Greenberg said.

"I'll listen very closely to Des as I'll listen very closely to all of the coaches. We're in the business of entertainment.

"Golden point has provided a number of entertaining finishes to the end of the season. We've had more golden point games in 2016 than ever before."

Greenberg noted changes had already been made for this year's finals series where a period of extra-time will be played before golden point.

One aspect of the game which is set for review though is the judiciary system.

Greenberg concedes the system creates confusion for fans through inconsistent penalties and gradings and it needs to be looked at.

"I think you will see some change going into 2017 but I'm not sure what (that change) will be," he said.

"I understand fans get frustrated but it's no new news to us that they get frustrated because there are difficulties in the system with loading and carry over points. It's a complex system.

"Where we can provide simplicity into that, we will, but be mindful that we're there to protect the players' interests on the field."
