NRL: Sharks' Tim Smith fined by police

Cronulla league halfback Tim Smith has been fined by police for remaining in the vicinity of licensed premises after being refused entry.

Smith was issued with a $550 infringement notice overnight.

In a statement released by the National Rugby League club, the Sharks said the matter would be dealt with internally before a final report will be referred to the NRL early this week.

"Smith has not been charged by police and there is no allegation of anti-social conduct outside of this matter," the statement read.

Smith has been playing for Cronulla's reserve grade outfit in the NSW Cup, but could be in line for a call-up to coach Shane Flanagan's first grade squad following a leg injury to five-eighth Albert Kelly.

Kelly faces a long stint on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg in the Sharks' 30-12 loss to North Queensland on Saturday night, with Smith a potential replacement ahead of next round's clash with South Sydney.

Off-field troubles have dogged 26-year-old Smith throughout his career, dating back to his time at Parramatta where he attended a rehabilitation clinic after several drunken episodes.
