Brad Fittler has fined himself $10,000 and will not be charged by police - but his reign as Sydney Roosters coach may be in jeopardy after police found the former test captain heavily intoxicated and half naked trying to gain access to the wrong hotel room in Townsville.
The latest drama to engulf the NRL could well be the final straw for Fittler, who was already under pressure to keep his job following the Roosters' abysmal start to the season.
"I take this opportunity to apologise for my behavior on Thursday night, I brought embarrassment to the club myself and my family,"Fittler said last night.
"I am disappointed with myself and apologise unreservedly to the occupants of the room who I disturbed. My behavior was unacceptable and I have fined myself $10,000."
Roosters chief executive Steve Noyce was due to arrive in Townsville yesterday for crisis talks with Fittler, a Roosters spokesperson confirmed.
According to local media reports, a female occupant phoned police after finding Fittler banging on the door to her Holiday Inn room about 3am on Friday morning. When police arrived, Fittler was still outside the woman's room wearing only a pair of shorts.
It is believed Fittler had mistaken the room for his own due to his drunken state.
"A female occupant staying at the Holiday Inn reported a man who was unknown to her was trying to get into her room," Townsville Police communications coordinator Sergeant Dave Finlay told the Townsville Bulletin. "She stated to police that she didn't know who he was and she slammed the door on him.
"The police were contacted and a crew was sent to investigate. The man was found outside the female occupant's room extremely intoxicated. He was escorted to his room, which was located on a different floor."
The Roosters confirmed Fittler had been moved on by police, but said precise details of the incident would be determined following Noyce's meeting with Fittler, Townsville police and Holiday Inn management.
Earlier this year, Fittler was part of the committee who banned Roosters star Willie Mason and Nate Myles for one match after they both admitted to having a few drinks on day non-prescribed by the NRL club.
The club said Fittler's fine money would be donated to a Salvation Army women's refuge charity.
