A group of businessmen are putting together an audacious bid for a second NRL team in Brisbane.
The Sydney Morning Herald is reporting Craig Davison - a member of a syndicate of businessmen that has sponsored and financially supported Brisbane Broncos players - is behind the new bid.
"I informed the Broncos last week, and they were quite good about it," Craig Davison said. "They will always be number two with me but this new team looks good, and planning is well advanced. It will have strong sponsorship backing."
The NRL has spoken about an interest in expanding in 2013, when a new broadcasting deal will be in place, and have received expressions of interest from the Central Coast, Perth, Ipswich and Central Queensland.
Television broadcaster prefer another team from Queensland to capitalise on the massive rugby league audience in the region.
It is understood that the new team would play at Suncorp Stadium on alternate weekends to the Broncos and that former Broncos coach Wayne Bennett would be a target to coach the side.
The Broncos entered the league in 1988 and have been the only Brisbane-based side apart from a three-year block from 1995-97 when the failed South Queensland Crushers franchise entered and exited amidst the Super League war.
