NRL Nines: Hurrell to avoid sanction

Warriors centre Konrad Hurrell has avoided attention from the NRL's match review committee with no charges stemming from his ugly collision with Manly captain Jake Trbojevic at the NRL Auckland Nines at Eden Park.

Warriors head coach Andrew McFadden confirmed after the 15-12 defeat in their second pool match that no disciplinary action would be taken against Hurrell, after Trbojevic was carted from the field with concussion following an attempted tackle early in the second-half.

The 21-year-old prop went in low trying to stop Hurrell but his head took the initial contact and video footage was unclear whether he connected with the ball-carrier's knee or thigh.

Trbojevic recovered sufficiently to stand sideline with his teammates as they sealed their second win of the day.

"No, we've already been told there won't be any charges," said McFadden.

"I didn't see a lot in it. I know his knee came up a little bit but I didn't think that made contact."

Manly also lost Jamie Buhrer to a suspected broken jaw following a heavy tackle from Warriors prop Albert Vete and Nathan Green to concussion. Buhrer was sent to hospital for scans while Green was later cleared right to take the field on day two.

McFadden expressed concern for Trbojevic's health but stressed the importance of correct tackling technique to ensure players' safety.

"If you put your head on the wrong side then you put yourself in trouble and no one likes to see that but certainly it wasn't great technique."

Hurrell was visibly upset following the incident and went over to check on Trbojevic while he was been tended to by medical staff.

Later, the 24-year-old rushed from the Warriors sheds dressed only in his underwear and ran towards the Manly room to reiterate his concern.

"That shows that Konny always has concern for people and there's no malice in what he does," said back-rower Ryan Hoffman.

"Obviously we were all concerned for the poor bloke on the ground.

"He was good at showing concern but we needed to refocus and he needed to focus on his next job."

Hurrell was last year suspended for three games after being found guilty of raising his knee and breaking the jaw of Cronulla defender Anthony Tupou.

He vowed to work on his running style and went on to endure a frustrating season where he struggled for form and fitness and spent time in the second tier NSW Cup competition.

Hurrell has been tipped to make a big impression this season after working hard to trim down and returned to the Warriors preseason in good physical shape.

Manly coach Trent Barrett was reluctant to condemn Hurrell's running action saying: "I didn't really have a look at it so it's hard to comment...but no one means to knock someone out."
