New Zealand international Nathan Fien has re-signed with St George Illawarra, ending speculation he would join coach Wayne Bennett in heading to NRL rivals Newcastle next season.
Fien agreed on Tuesday to a one-year contract extension, keeping him at the Dragons until the end of 2013.
The upgraded deal could see out the crafty hooker's career, given he will be 34 by the time the contract runs out.
Despite having another year to run on his contract with the premiers, there had been strong speculation that Fien would switch to the Knights in 2012 to continue his association with Bennett, who will begin a four-year deal with Newcastle from next season.
"I am very happy to have sorted my future out and remain with the Dragons, as I have really enjoyed my time at the club and representing it so far," Fien said in a statement.
"I am aware of the history attached to wearing the '`red v' jersey and am now looking forward to the rest of the season as well as the bright future working under Steve Price."
Fien has played 30 games for the Dragons since arriving at the club midway through 2009, and has 226 NRL games in total including previous stints with North Queensland and the New Zealand Warriors.
