Jailed former Warriors prop Russell Packer looks set to resume his NRL career but uncertainty looms over which club he will join once he becomes a free man in January.
Conflicting media reports yesterday had the 24-year-old linked to the Penrith Panthers and the St George Illawarra Dragons, while he is also reported to have fielded offers from his most recent club, the Newcastle Knights, along with the Brisbane Broncos and South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Packer is nearing the end of a jail term after he pleaded guilty to assault in January. He was successful in his April appeal to have his no-parole term overturned and is eligible for release on January 5.
Several clubs quickly began testing the waters to sign Packer for 2015, with Penrith Panthers football director Phil Gould one official to have visited him in jail looking to offer him a contract.
Packer has recently been granted weekend release from Sydney's Silverwater jail and reportedly met family last Saturday and informed them of his decision to take up a two-year deal to play under his former Warriors coach, Ivan Cleary, at Penrith.
