SYDNEY - All Blacks rugby midfielder Ma'a Nonu has again raised the prospect of defecting to league in 2008 after mixing it with National Rugby League (NRL) stars in Sydney at the weekend.
He and All Blacks teammate Jerry Collins were part of a Kiwis invitation side who missed the semifinals at the Harvey Norman Beach Footy tournament at Maroubra Beach.
Nonu, 24, has spoken of a league switch several times in the past and repeated he would look at all offers when his New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU) contract expires after next year's World Cup in France.
"It has got me interested again," the 16-test All Black told the Sydney Daily Telegraph of the weekend's events.
"I played a bit of league back in school but it is not big (in New Zealand).
"I will have to see how it goes back home. I am contracted to the All Blacks until next year but I am willing to talk to (NRL) clubs.
"I watch a lot of rugby league and really love the game. Over the past couple of days I have met some of the superstars I watch on TV. It has been awesome."
Nonu played all four tests on the All Blacks' unbeaten tour of Europe last month and was tried at second five-eighth in the second test against France when he was paired with Mils Muliaina in the midfield for the first time.
He has struggled to nail a regular All Blacks starting spot but the selectors clearly see him as a midfield option after Tana Umaga's retirement.
His blockbusting style would make him a sought-after league signing in the NRL.
Nonu revealed he is a Canterbury Bulldogs fan and has family in Sydney.
"Terry Lamb (former Bulldogs five-eighth) was one of my heroes and I watch the boys every game.
"I'm not sure where I would play. It would just be where I could step in."
NRL chief executive David Gallop said Nonu would be a success in league.
"He is obviously a class player," Gallop said.
Kangaroos captain Darren Lockyer's Queensland side won the beach footy tournament, beating the NRL Young Guns 3-2 in the final.
